    Urban Male Leadership Academy Scholars Program

    What We Do

    The Percy E. Sutton Urban Male Leadership Academy (UMLA) Scholars Program aims to empower and support young men of color, with a focus on Black and Latino male students, through rigorous academic and personal support over the course of their college careers.

    UMLA is funded through the CUNY Black Male Initiative (BMI), which has strived to increase enrollment rates of African American young men in CUNY schools since 2004.

    What We Offer

    UMLA strives to support the academic, personal and professional growth of our students through:

    • Peer mentoring
    • Leadership opportunities within the student-run UMLA Advisory Board
    • Professional networking opportunities
    • A “Men of Color” dialogue series

    To be eligible for UMLA, students must be incoming freshmen and meet several program requirements (see below):

    Requirements
    • Apply to Baruch College using the CUNY application
    • Qualify/apply for the Percy E. Sutton SEEK program at Baruch
    • Complete a separate UMLA application, which includes:
      • Typed application form
      • Unofficial high school transcript
      • Typed responses to four short essay questions
      • Two typed recommendation letters; one must be from a high school teacher or guidance counselor
      • An interview by the UMLA Program Director and current members
