    National Association of Black Accountants

The National Association of Black Accountants (NABA, Inc.) is a nonprofit membership association dedicated to bridging the opportunity gap for black professionals in the accounting, finance and related business professions. Representing more than 200,000 black professionals in these fields, NABA advances its mission by providing education, resources, and meaningful career connections to both professional and student members, fulfilling the principle of the motto, “Lifting as We Climb!”

In December 1969, nine African-Americans met in New York City to discuss the unique challenges and limited opportunities they faced in the accounting profession. In that year, there were only 136 African-American Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) out of a total of 100,000 in the United States. This group wanted to establish an organization to address the concerns of minorities entering the accounting profession and to make a commitment to professional, and academic excellence.

The NABA Baruch Student Chapter strives for excellence, professionalism, and service to the community. The chapter has won the organization’s National Division I Chapter Award (SCREP), three first prize recognition within ten years in the NABA National KPMG Case Study competition, and first and second prizes in the Deloitte NABA New York Case Study competition. It is one of the oldest and largest collegiate student chapters. The Baruch Student Chapter and the SEEK Program at Baruch have a unique relationship and a shared mission to provide access and to serve unrepresented students. The Baruch Student Chapter was established in 1978 by SEEK student James Lewis and SEEK counselor, Patricia Johnson (now retired), who served as faculty advisor for over 32 years.
