Counseling
The counselors are the heart of the SEEK Program and have made it the success it is today.
Upon acceptance to Baruch, each SEEK student is assigned an experienced counselor to assist him or her in handling the academic and emotional demands of college life.
They will assist you as you
- Choose your courses
- Register for classes
- Select a major
- Deal with any personal issue that may arise
Throughout their academic career, SEEK students continue to develop their relationship with their counselors. While other students may have professors to serve as mentors, they rarely have one individual who is part of their lives as they mature from entering freshmen to graduating seniors.
Workshops and Enrichment
At SEEK, we recognize that students need more than academic coaching; therefore, as a supplement to individual counseling, we run a number of workshops on personal growth.
7 Habits of Highly Effectively College Students
Based on the renowned book, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey, one of the counselors runs a workshop to help students recognize, manage, and work toward their goals. This is an interactive workshops–students implement the techniques as they learn about them.
Diversity Workshop
SEEK students come from many different ethnic and racial backgrounds. The diversity workshop allows students to share their experiences and learn from one another.
Make Your Money Work for You
New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and college students have a great number of expenses. This workshop teaches students how to budget their money in order to prevent them from accumulating excessive debt. In addition, it teaches them the truth about credit cards and the dangers involved their use.
Museum Tours
One of the SEEK counselors is an official tour guide for a number of museums in the city. Multiple times throughout the semester, students are invited to visit museums with the counselor, who leads them through the exhibits. Many students do not take advantage of the wealth of cultural resources available in New York City, and the SEEK Program helps diversify students’ interests and experiences while increasing their cultural literacy.
Stress Management
College life can be very stressful, so the SEEK Program offers workshops that teach students specific techniques that can help them manage their stress levels. As a group, students learn to identify stressors and find ways to deal with them so that the emotional and physical ramifications are no longer an impediment to their success and well-being.
Cultural and Recreational Trips
SEEK Students have the opportunity to go on a variety of field trips throughout the year. These trips help build a sense of community between the students and staff. For some students, they offer the chance to travel outside of New York City for the first time.
Past trips have included:
Mystic Seaport, Mystic, Connecticut
Historical Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Washington DC
Niagara Falls, Canada
Falling Water House, Pennsylvania
Reading Outlet Mall, Reading, Pennsylvania
Franklin Mills Outlet, Pennsylvania
Woodbury Commons Outlet, Upstate New York
Great Adventure, New Jersey
