About Us
Black and Latinx Success Amplified is a multi-prong model of services that integrates and expands existing programs dedicated to supporting Black and Latinx students’ academic success—from matriculation to graduation, and beyond. This large initiative provides intense programming support for service and experiential learning opportunities, culturally responsive services, and relationship-building efforts with faculty and mentors in students’ field of study. Black and Latinx Success Amplified also encompass family programming, available in English and Spanish, to cultivate support systems for students that extend beyond academics.
Our program operates from an explicitly asset-based stance, acknowledging the cultural wealth our students bring with them to campus, as we provide the support and scaffolded experiences to guide students towards career success. Our support features are grounded within a model of Community Cultural Wealth, which was first introduced by Tara Yosso in 2005 to explore the talents, strengths, and experiences that students of color bring with them to their college environment. Yosso lays out six forms of cultural capital that are cultivated within communities of color including:
- Aspirational capital—the ability to maintain hopes and dreams, even in the face of real or perceived barriers
- Linguistic capital – the ability to communicate in multiple styles or languages
- Familial capital – those supports and cultural knowledges cultivated within homes
- Social capital – the networks and contacts students use to pursue their goals
- Navigational capital – students’ ability to maneuver through social institutions, like schools
- Resistant capital – knowledge and skills fostered through a historical legacy of social justice, resistance to subordination, and a commitment to equity
We see it is as our responsibility to amplify the assets that our students bring with them to campus, help them further cultivate their Community Cultural Wealth, and connect them to various support services to prepare them for life beyond Baruch.
As students progress through the program, they will gain the experiences, aptitudes, skill sets, values and approaches that today’s employers are seeking based on the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Competencies.
