Global Finance
The field of finance is booming unlike ever before. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has predicted that the demand for financial advice is increasing, and will cause a 23% increase in employment of financial analysts from 2010-2020. Eight out of twenty of CNN’s “Best Jobs for Fast Growth” were in the finance and economic sector.
The Global Finance and Economic Program at the Baruch Leadership Academy prepares motivated rising 10th through 12th grade students for successful careers in the thriving industries of business, finance, and the global market. This specialized track at the Academy exposes students to briefing for application to American universities and colleges, focused learning in the field of business in a global context, and interactive field trips in the world’s most noted business centers. The students will have networking opportunities with industry insiders and like-minded high school students from across the world.
The Global Finance and Economics Program at the Baruch Leadership Academy strives to give students a comprehensive overview of finance and investments through the following initiatives:
- Real-time simulated training at the Wasserman Trading Floor of Baruch College’s Financial Services Center
- Workshops to help understand the foundations and components of finance
- Exploration of various business professions through panels, field trips and guest presenters
- Site visits to the financial landmarks throughout New York City
- Networking events and student social programming

Introduction to Finance and Investing
This class emphasizes the importance of heavily researching investment decisions and presents both conservative and aggressive investment strategies in the context of risk and reward. Stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and alternative investments are discussed.
Introduction to Economics
This lecture introduces students to the key principles of economics and world-renowned economists who have contributed to the wealth of knowledge about the global economy. Faculty members familiarize students with fundamental concepts of economics by providing an overview of the supply and demand model for goods and services, mercantilism, and comparative advantage. Current events are presented within the framework of economic theories.
A Walk Down Wall Street
Students take a tour of New York City’s historical Financial District where they discuss a wide-range of topics such as finance, architecture, history, entrepreneurship and current affairs. Students learn about celebrated historical figures such as Alexander Hamilton and Robert Fulton, as well as famous monuments such as New York Stock Exchange, Bowling Green, and the Charging Bull.
Ready, Set, Trade!
Students visit the Bert W. and Sandra Wasserman Trading Floor where they are introduced to equity trading simulations. Each student creates his or her own trading account on the Rotman Interactive Trader software and competes against one another to see how to derive the most return on their investments. Students are taught about the mechanics of the trading software and simulation, and advised to utilize three strategies while trading: long position, short position and market maker to gain the most benefit in each round.
